September is Boomer Back-to-School Month
Where I grew up, I always went back to school in September, the day after Labor Day. This month we’ll be dressing a 6-by-9 inch variation of the traditional Oklahoma Boomer block in their back-to-school finest.
My pattern for the block is here:
If you prefer, you can use the foundations for paper piecing Boomer and Boomerette, created by Julie. Thanks Julie! If you choose to paper piece, be sure to remove the paper foundations from your blocks. (If you use a foundation designed to be left in the blocks, it’s OK to leave it in–you might want to leave a note for the winner so they know).
As usual, you may make up to a maximum of 9 blocks for chances in the drawing at the end of the month. As always, if you like, you can make more and donate them to the pot.

Add the tag Boomer to all your blog posts about this block. The category should be blocks when you are posting photos of your blocks to enter them in the drawing; use the category sent and received when you are posting about mailing or receiving blocks; and the category show and tell to share projects you make from this block (whether they are lotto blocks or blocks you make for yourself.
Fabric Guidelines
- BACKGROUND fabric should be white: it can be solid or a white-on-white (WOW) print.
- SKIN fabric is quilter’s choice. It may be a solid or tone-on-tone (TOT) print. You don’t need to necessarily choose a color that is realistic–Boomers are a very abstracted version of a person–because the pieces are quite small, a small scale print will work best.
- SHIRT, PANTS, SOCKS, SHOES, SKIRT, SHORTS and/or DRESS can be quilter’s choice of fabrics.
If you make multiple blocks you can use the same white background and/or SKIN fabrics in all your blocks. You can repeat other fabrics in up to three blocks as long as each block is unique.
The Virtual Quilt
The blocks in this month’s virtual quilt were made by sneak peekers, Bonita, Ginny, Julie P, Laurina, Liz C, Nann, Peggy and me.
You can find full-size versions of these photos in my Flickr photo set Boomer Goes Back to School
Those are just too cute! I love the variation in dress styles and shirt fabrics.
Oh, shoot — or is that “shoe-t”? My Boomers are barefoot!
