Setting the Table with Lotto Blocks

Some quilters have a go-to quilt or block pattern.  I have the set of go-to block patterns … ones I have chosen or created for the Block Lotto.

My so-called “modernish” mini-group asked me to demo the 6-minute circle a month ago and I decided that instead of creating orphan block samples, I’d turn them into placemats for one of the guilds community service projects–placemats for a local organization called Kitchen Angels that provide free, nutritious meals to our homebound neighbors facing life-challenging conditions.

You might recognize these blocks as last year’s Sunrise and Bead on a String. For the placemats, I changed the size of the background for the sunrise block and I made the bead blocks a bit smaller (6-inch finished size with a 4 1/2-inch circle). One pair is a little bit country patchwork, the other, a bit more sophisticated/minimalist.

I had some fun playing with free-motion quilting  on both blocks, though it shows more than I expected on the bead block placemats.

(Pay no attention to the horrible floor–the owner of the house promised me that he was replacing it before I moved in and 4 months later, it has been schedule to happen in a week.)
