Wrapping up the Year with Wonky Strips
In December, we are making another long rectangle block made from scrappy fabrics of your choice with the addition of Black and White. These blocks are 5 by 18 1/2 inches (to finish at 4 1/2 by 18 inches).
I made this one.
The fabric guidelines and my directions for making this block can be found here:
You may make a maximum of 9 blocks for chances in the drawing at the end of the month. The target set size for the winners will be 48 blocks.
If you make multiple block pairs, you can use the same black and white fabric(s) in all your blocks and can repeat other fabrics in multiple blocks, but each block should contain a unique combination of fabrics.
Fabric Guidelines
The guidelines for these scrappy blocks are meant to be easy and to enable anyone who happens to have leftover fabrics from their projects to use them in their blocks. I envisioned that those that are using fabrics from other projects might share them with us in their posts this month. A few more words (than in the block pattern) and examples of the rules for these blocks:
- The blocks should contain at least 8 pieces of fabric. Some of these fabrics could be duplicates and, if you begin with narrow rectangles, you’ll have more than 8 pieces in your block.
- Two of those pieces must be black/white. This could be two pieces of the same black and white print fabric, two different black and white print fabrics (like in my example blocks) or one white fabric and one black fabric.
- The rest of the fabrics are quilters choice. You can repeat fabrics, but you have to use at least three different quilter’s choice fabrics in addition to the black/white in your block.
Tags and Categories
Add the tag strippy to all your blog posts about this block.
The category should be blocks when you are posting photos of your blocks to enter them in the drawing; use the category sent and received when you are posting about mailing or receiving blocks; and the category show and tell to share projects you make from this block (whether they are lotto blocks or blocks you make for yourself.
The Virtual Quilt
This virtual quilt is made from block photos from Barb P, Ginny, Glenna, Karen N, Margaret, Mary, Pat K, Peggy, Robin, and one more person whose name I lost in my process of cropping/renaming/uploading and re-sizing–if it was you, please remind me so I can give credit where credit is due.
Quilt Setting Idea
Just before I sent out the sneak peek, I saw this quilt on the blog on Mary Quilts and thought it was a nice bit of synchronicity and a great setting idea for this block.
Maybe it’s because I always wanted to make a strippy quilt, but I love this and believe you could add any color for the sashing and borders to make it appropriate for anyone: male, female, young, old, traditional or modern.
Thanks! This looks like my kind of scrappy fun!
