November 2013 Recap

November 2013 Recap

The block for November was the Banded Basket block, made from Quilter’s choice of Basket fabric with a Tone-on-tone or solid fabric handle, band and (optional) base, and a love volume background. I made this one.  Guidelines used for this month are here: Banded Basket Blocks–Because I Love Them In November, 18 quilters made 76 blocks, which were won by Cathy and Laura. Congratulations to you both. Ellen joined the Block Lotto in November....

more leaves this week…

Leaves from Jo along with a sweet little Christmas decoration! yes it will go on my tree! Also, a leaf from Charlene that was wrapped in fabric! Thank you! Charlene told me her basket blocks have been duds so far. She thought she could still use them else where. Made me wonder if Sophie ever thought of doing a “dud” block lotto. A place for all the wrong size or fabric blocks to go. Julie

Here are my three blocks for this month. The handles were easier than I thought but still not my thing. One went real easy the others were a little more difficult. Started a new job sadly so I have less time for quilting. Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate. I am a Mayflower descendent so it is an important event for...

I’m stitching some Basket Handles today … How about You?

I’m stitching some Basket Handles today … How about You?

I’ve been working on my simple medallion idea.  Here are the handles for some of my banded basket blocks.  My plan is to stitch them by hand while I watch television tonight. I have enjoyed reading the comments about your bias appliqué experience–I hope anyone sitting on the fence about trying the block because of those handles has been reading them, too. Here are two that might inspire you: Cathy L said that she, “didn’t...

One November Basket

One November Basket

My sister is about to have a baby. Her due date was 11-12-13. I think baby is too snug as a bug in mommy’s belly since the cold weather set in because he hasn’t arrived yet.  Since they are keeping the name a secret, I can’t do anymore work on the baby quilt until the baby is born and the name announced….hopefully it will be sooner rather than later. However it was good that I was able to get my block lotto block done...

About the Band at the Top of the Basket

In the directions, the fabric for the top of the band is cut wider (1 inch) and then trimmed to 1/2 inch after it sewn to the basket unit, for a finished width of 1/4 inch. If you prefer, you could start with a skinnier strip, 3/4 inch by 6 1/2 inches, but I really do think you end up with a more even result if you cut wider and then trim it after it’s sewn on the basket side. If your blocks come out too tall, it could be that you forgot...
