One Sunrise Block

One Sunrise Block

I I couldn’t get the templates to print to right size, it may be me, or it maybe that we have A4 paper as the standard here.   So had fun with a pair of compasses and a ruler!  The paper-based rays were straight forward and used far less fabric than I expected!  But using the 6-min method to put on the background chopped off half the points, so unpicked and decided to applique the curved sections, turned out fine.  But only one for...

One June Block to Donate

One June Block to Donate

I just don’t see how I can get any more blocks completed before the end of this month. June just whizzed by and now company is coming to visit so, even though, I really really really want to make another block or two I don’t think it’s good form to go sewing up in my room with guests in the house!! LOL!!! So here is one at least to donate to the lottery. I first made an arc and well, I didn’t notice that I needed to put...

One for June from Kathleen

One for June from Kathleen

I got a shock when I read that Sophie had sent out the sneak peak – what happened to June?  Took time to make a sunrise block before I missed out entirely.  I haven’t been avoiding it because of difficulty – just busy, and it is not a block that you can knock out a set in the morning, for sure.  I might find time for a second, but will post this one now so I’m sure it’s...

Practice makes perfect.

Practice makes perfect.

I persevered through a bad first attempt and finally got these cute blocks done!  Can I just say that I LOVE LOVE LOVE these cute little Sunrises.  Whoever wins all of them will have a darling quilt!  I think these are my very favorite lotto pattern.   P.S.  Piecing the blocks gave me no trouble at all.   My only struggle was that I printed them the wrong size and pieced 4 of them before I realized it; thus, the photo shows 4 completed blocks...

Printing the Sunrise Templates

Printing the Sunrise Templates

I’ve had a couple of email messages from people about printing and sizes and measurements today … and I thought others might also have questions. This is what the print options look like when I print (from an iMac).  You may have to change the orientation from portrait to landscape so that it fits on the page in a way that it nearly FILLS the page.  In the bottom half of the screen, you can see that I have the Auto Rotate option...

2 sunrise blocks from Kim: Never say Never

2 sunrise blocks from Kim: Never say Never

Just in May  I was visiting my Mom’s sewing group and she was finishing up some NY Beauty quilt blocks.  Her friend asked if I quilted like my Mom and I said, “I would NEVER do a bunch of  complicated pieced blocks like that.  So I also groaned when I saw this month’s blocks. But, after the first one (which I did for the MMQA)  they were much easier than I anticipated thanks to Sophie’s helpful instructions and...

Sunrises for My Sampler

Sunrises for My Sampler

I groaned when I saw this block and found out I had to make 10 for my sampler. I also know myself well enough to know that if I didn’t get them made this month they would never get made and my sampler would go on the UFO pile.  I’m also one that doesn’t shy away from a challenge so I plunged in this weekend to get these made since I’ll be out of town at a family reunion next weekend. Surprise! They really aren’t...

One sunblock!

One sunblock!

I made my block after I got the sneak peak email. And I sent a picture of it to Sophie for the virtual quilt. But I wasn’t happy with the block. Especially after seeing everyone else’s perfectly pieced blocks. My center was a little lopsided and the points didn’t reach it like they should. So I ripped the center out and attached it again and it still wasn’t right. So I ripped out the seams for the background and redid...

One sunrise block

One sunrise block

I had to struggle to make this come out the correct size, but in the end it worked out. I paper-pieced the rays first, and appliquéd the yellow center on pretty easily, but ran into challenges when I tried to reverse-applique the outside border onto the paper-pieced center. For my next block (for my own sampler) I think I will try to make the ray unit first and then appliqué that unit to a 14.5 x 7.5 rectangle. Then I will cut away the back,...
